Happy International Cat Day!

Happy International Cat Day from Yale University Press’s art & architecture department!

We’re celebrating by turning again to one of our favorite recent publications that features two famous art-world appreciators of cats: Andy Warhol / Ai Weiwei by Max Delany and Eric Shiner. Andy Warhol owned dozens of cats, and documented them in his self-published book 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy; the (many) cats of Ai Weiwei even have their own Tumblr.  The last article in the book Andy Warhol / Ai Weiwei is by Matt Wrbican, Chief Archivist at the Andy Warhol Museum, and is titled “Meeooaaww-AW-AWW” – it discusses cats in the lives and in the work of Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei (read an excerpt).

The book accompanies an exhibition that is on view until the end of the month at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh – if you can get there, it should not be missed.  The book, too, is extraordinary, managing to bring a fresh perspective to two hugely important, influential, and intensely studied artists by looking at them in tandem.

We’re also celebrating by treating our own feline companions to a little more of whatever makes them happy — cheek-scratching? solitude? Mozart on the stereo? catnip? bone broth? each cat is different!

Here’s a brief introduction to some of some of the fabulous cats of the YUP art & architecture department.
